WHERE: The southern end of the South County Trailway in Yonkers and the Putnam Trail in Van Cortlandt Park
START: McLean Avenue and Tibbetts Road, Yonkers (Bee-Line Bus route 4 from Woodlawn subway station (4 train))
FINISH: 238 Street subway station (1 train)
This will be a reprise of a walk I led in December 2021. See this post: https://onfootonwheels.squarespace.com/other-walks-around-town/the-putnam-trail-yonkers-and-the-bronx
Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx is bisected by the Putnam Trail, following the route of the old Putnam Division of the New York Central Railroad. Passenger trains ran on the “Put” to Brewster, New York until 1958, and occasional freight service continued until 1980.
We’ll gather at the Woodlawn subway station by the station booth, leaving promptly at 12 Noon, then taking the #4 Bee-Line bus to the starting point. Bus fare is $2.90 ($1.45 senior/disabled), payable in cash or with MetroCard (not OMNY). If we’re feeling up to it, at the end of the walk we’ll climb the Manhattan College steps up into Riverdale. We’ll stop for lunch at the end of the walk regardless of where we end up.
All are welcome; just let me know you’re coming and be on time. In the event of inclement weather, this walk will be rescheduled with 24 hours’ notice.
